2008 is over. Almost. I don´t think, that the last few days will change it. At least i hope so. But ... i don´t see any game-changing development for the last few hours of this years.

One of the big headlines of this year was "loss": The biggest loss at first. I´ve lost my grandma at the beginning of this year. My grandma was already in an age of 60 when i was born. That´s an age where the death starts to take away our grand parents. So the additional 34 years were a gift. Each year.

In the middle of the year i´ve lost a friendship ... at least i thought she was a good friend. But errors are human and i´m just a human. I really thought that that this loss would hurt me. I don´t make friendship easily. But at the end the exact circumstances of this situation created opposite feelings. At the end it´s better that way: Friendship is something mutual ... and if one person think of a relation as a friendship and one other as a loose acquaitance it´s better to keep it the second way. I still do not fully understand the dynamics of that situation but i stopped thinking about it a while ago. You can´t look into the brain of other people.

At the end of the year I´ve lost another friendship to a large heap of misunderstandings. But without trust there is no friendship ... and at the end there was no trust. It´s just a very loose acquaintence now from my point of view. It was my fault as well as the the fault of this friend. But well ... this happens. Shit happens.

The other big headline was "win": I´ve won new friends. Albeit i never met Marianne, we have developed a strange kind of friendship in the mean time. I´ve met other great persons this year. I would call them friends right at this moment, but they are already important to me.

Additionally i thought, i´ve lost the very special relation to another person, but the end of this year proved otherwise. There are very rare persons in your life who are so special, that even not seeing them for a while and huge hassles in both lifes doesn´t change a thing.

Personal targets? The last two years weren´t good ones in regard of my weight. Too much work, too much frustrations, less sports. This has to change, but i started to do more sports. So this will be just a matter of months after. Christmas is over, so no further problematic days in sight. Want back to my old weight.

The blog got more and more important to me this year. Personally and professionally. My objectives for this year were 5000 Visits per day , 750 subscribers und 600.000 Pageviews. The results of this year: Up to 10000 visits per day (with large variances the, at the weekend the visit count drops to 1000, monday and friday are the best days), 1175 subscribers (right before cristmas) and 750.000 page views and 15 million served requests by the webserver. Objectives for the next year? Well ... up to 20000 vists, 2000 subscribers and 1.5 million page views. I know ... very high targets but targets have to be hard to be challenging.

The "Less known Solaris features" series was a large success. 15.000 downloads of the pdf versions. The web log versions of the document´s articles were loaded 105.859 times in the last year. My plans for the next year? I´m already working on a german version. I will publish it as a book as planed at first. I will publish it as a free .pdf-book again. In the next few weeks i will publish a revised version (with the help of Ceri Davis, who helped with the english grammar and typo checking) of the english version. I hope i can iron out all the tex warnings in the next few weeks. Such a tedious job...

Professionally i will plan my next steps in the next few weeks: I´m member of the ´09 SEED mentoring programme as mentee and i was one of the first ones matched to a mentor. I think i had luck with my mentor.

I plan to talk more often on public conferences (hope my papers are accepted, one is a live LKSF session, another a talk about my view to virtualisation and some additional smaller sessions) and i´m planing for a new career step (I´m staying at Sun, at least when Sun doesn´t think, i should be part of the 6000 people, so it´s something internal to Sun) but it´s much to early to talk about that.

I wish you all a good start in the next year. May all your hopes for 2009 come true. May all your fears in 2009 turn out as unnescessary over the course of the year.

Grossfamilien sind doch was Schoenes ... manchmal

I don´t like this large networking receptions ... my degree of having fun is reciprocally proportional to the number of people at the event minus 2. And when you add a still active sinusitis, earache and impaired hearing to that, it´s a sure recipe for a good networking. I left the event after 5 minutes and opted for my bed.

TPM writes in "Sun, Novell, and Cray - Time to go private?":
The company at the very top of the list is - no drum roll needed - Sun Microsystems. While Sun's Solaris is one of the best operating systems on the planet and its servers are decently engineered, the company is spending far too much time justifying its strategies to investors and not enough time selling its products and building up its channels
This is a really rare moment ... but i´m sharing the opinion of TPM. My very personal opinion is, that he is correct: Sun should go private. Our product portfolio is excellent at the moment, i´m aware of many future developments (but i´m not allowed to talk about them ... in short: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet). I´m perfectly sure that our strategy will pay off, but this will need some additional time.

But you can´t do this job with a bloodhound gang of analysts in your neck and headcount reductions to appease the financial community. And obviously we have the best operating system on the planet

PS: By the way - sometimes the financial markets looks more like a professional version of Las Vegas to me ... could you explain the existence of more credit default swaps than credits otherwise? As far as i remember the whole stocks thing was invented to find investors ... but this time must have been passed a long time ago.

Whenever investors were outnumbered by players (buying and selling stocks just based on the quotes and chart analysis without knowing much about the fundamentals of the company is not that different from playing Blackjack or Poker) we really had problems: The credit crunch now , the world economic crisis in the thirties of the last century, the NewEconomy bubble. Gamblers tend to panic in the case of unforeseen or large losses. Long time investors look at them as a chance (Evidence: The horde of investors versus Warren Buffet at Goldman Sachs)

Perhaps we should introduce a tax on stock trading: The shorter you hold a financial product, the more tax you pay on it. When you buy some stocks or papers to hold them for years (retirement funds or something like that) you would pay no taxes on the stocks. The more speculative a financial product is, the more tax you pay on it. Maybe such a instrument would give us a sane, a investors stock market back (at least we could pay the next "butt-saving-bailout" with the money)

Disclaimer: This is my private opinion. Really. A private opinion in the sense of: "Thinking about it in the evening while sitting in my living room with a glass of a good red wine ..."

Who loves quiet conversations about feelings or ideas, and can give a dynamite presentation to a big audience, but seems awkward in groups and maladroit at small talk? Who has to be dragged to parties and then needs the rest of the day to recuperate? Who growls or scowls or grunts or winces when accosted with pleasantries by people who are just trying to be nice?
I´m feeling observed. I can do a lessig-style presentation in front of 200 people without any problems but in a bar i´m really quiet, i hate senseless smalltalking like hell. A text catching my thoughts at the moment.

While writing the article about the UltraSPARC T1 on the train ride back to Hamburg yesterday afternoon, i had an idea for a solution to save large amount of time a day. I think, anybody knows the problem: You are in a conf call, anything was said, but not by everybody ... or someone uses his slot in the "Misc." session at the end in an abusive way to talk about the books he or she had read in the past or what people he or she had met. Or news from the last vacation. You know, that timewaisting stuff ...

But the solution is sooo simple: The teleconf selector and multiplexor. In every conference there is a person detecting a stalled teleconference. This state is reached, when someone talks but delivers no important information. Now you can simple switch to the unstalled telephone conferences and hear it. I think four or five telephone conferences in parallel is a good compromise ... there is no danger, that there will be good informations in two of four conf calls at the same time. And even when there is this situation put one of the good informations in the GIB (good information buffer) for a delayed replay when there is no other good information..

This would really save much time.

Back from Toulouse ... i´ve used the two hours in the plane for writing some notes about it. I had a really good weekend. The inner city of Toulouse on Friday. Saturday i´ve visited Biarritz and San Sebastian. Sunday was filled by a trip to Andorra and Barcelona. I´m full of impressions now. And i was able to store only a few of them in photos.

Driving to the capital of Andorra by using the Pas de la Casa is especially impressive. You have an impressive view on the surrounding mountains.

Andorra la Vella was somewhat disappointing for me (in regard of the planed purpose). It seems that size of shoes above a german 44 are unknown. Cheap shoes are nice, but they should fit at least.

Okay, from there we drove to Spain and ahead to Barcelona. Barcelona is a great city, but i need some more time there. I saw only a minimum of the city (La Rambla and the Curch of La Sagrada Familia ... and a little bit of the harbour). At least i was able to buy my 13th Starbucks collectors mug yesterday (everybody needs a strange thing to collect).

I will post some photos in the next few days.

What a week ... thank god it´s weekend. Monday and Tuesday working at the booth at the Hamburger Strategietagen. Wednesday meeting with a customer about test equipment and directly driving from there to the next customer to make a two hour stand up comedy ... err .... presentation about our equipment despite of first signs of an upcoming cold (albeit i thought i had my allergic nose again, in 95% this is the correct diagnosis, well ... this time it were the other five percents ). Thursday hacking together a demo case for a certificate based OpenVPN on some Linksys routers (easy stuff, sure, but not when the firmware seems to have a nasty bug). Was a bad idea two write about something similar in my wiki. In between working on the security presentation. Friday two presentations, voice just gone downhill.

Need my vacation. BTW: I won´t fly to New York out of personal reasons. I´ve postponed this trip to end of May or beginning of June. This postponement has some advantages ... given the subprime crisis and the effects to the US currency shopping in New York will be much better then. You have to see the upside potential on any problem ...
